Life can be incredibly stressful. We work, study, and raise our families, sometimes all at the same time. This means it’s more important than ever that you keep your home stress-free. Your home needs to be a place you can relax, chill out, and unwind after a difficult day. You need to be able to feel comfortable and completely at ease. Your home’s décor and layout can have a powerful impact on how you feel. Here are some of the best home design tips to make sure that your home is a relaxing, calming space to be in.

Home Design Tips That Promote Relaxation

Home Design Layout

The layout of a room goes a long way towards setting the tone and creating a focus point. In the living room, if your seating faces the TV, the TV automatically becomes the focus of the room. Instead, create a more social atmosphere by positioning any seating you have so that they face each other. In the bedroom, your focus depends on the view. If the view from your window is fantastic, position the bed so you’re facing the window, and leave the curtains open as much as possible. If you don’t have a nice view from your bedroom window, position your bed to face the door so that it welcomes you into the room.

Colors

It can be very tempting for some people to go for bold and bright colors. However, cool, calming shades such as pastels, whites, and creams, create a much more relaxing atmosphere. If you really want to use bold colors, keep them to rooms where you need to be attentive, such as the kitchen or home office. It’s a good idea to paint your bathroom walls brighter colors, to help kick start your morning. Another option could be to install a feature wall or add bright home furnishings. You could also add photographs and artwork that bring back happy memories. Having them in clear sight will lift your mood and make you smile.

Comfort

Comfort is obviously a large part of being able to relax. It’s recommended that you change your mattress every 8 years to keep it comfortable. You should also make sure you have a comfy sofa with plenty of cushions and some blankets on hand for cooler evenings. Consider adding seating to the bedrooms and kitchen to offer extra comfort.

Declutter

Clutter on shelving, tables, sideboards, or even the floor, can make us feel stressed out. Reducing the clutter and keeping everything organized, neat, and easy to find is a simple way to make your home a more relaxed environment. Take inventory of your belongings and throw out, sell, or donate anything that you don’t need or want. You want to make sure that everything is organized, and you have a system in place. There’s nothing more stressful than not being able to find something you need. You can always have a designated storage area to put excess clutter in.

Let Fresh Air In

Fresh air is a fantastic way to make your home feel fresh, look brighter, and smell nice. While it can be hard to open all your windows in the winter time, try and let a little fresh air in when you can. Then, as soon as the weather gets warmer, open your windows. Fresh air is a brilliant way to get a quick and natural mood boost.

Lighting

If you can, add dimmers to your main room lights to give yourself more brightness options. Add lamps to any areas that you read or spend time in at night. This will add comfort and ease. Candles and fireplaces can be another great way to set a tone of calm and relaxation.

Aroma

Smells can also affect your mood. Be sure to find air fresheners and scents that compliment your home. Floral scents, either from fresh flowers, air fresheners, or candles, are refreshing, soothing, and relaxing, especially in the spring and summer months. In the colder seasons, you might want to opt for warmer fragrances, such as winter spices.

Flooring

Start at the floor and work up. Most of us take our shoes off at home, so having a comfortable floor is a must. Wooden flooring with soft rugs makes a fantastic, stylish alternative to carpets, and can feel great on bare feet. Soft rugs add a sense of comfort and warmth, especially in the colder months.

Accessories can go a long way to changing the look and feel of your home. Consider new homeware as a cheap and easy way to make some changes and add some personality to your space. Remember, it’s your home, so decorate and accessorize to your taste. Everyone’s personal home design will be different, but using these tips will be sure to help. What you find relaxing may not be the same as someone else, but as long as it helps you that is all that matters!
