Thrift shopping is more than scavenging through old clothes because you don’t want to spend an excessive amount of money on a new piece. It’s also a way to build a wardrobe that is unique and full of diversity.

An Essential Guide to Second-Hand and Thrift Shopping

I started thrift shopping at a young age when, according to my mom, I formed a shopping addiction. But, I also didn’t have a lot of money, much less a bank account.

Even so, after a few years, I realized all of the benefits that thrift shopping holds to the environment along with your closet. After all, it is the more sustainable option, which is one of the reasons why it is now “trendy” as people are leaning more toward sustainability with regard to the environment.

⎆ Thrift shopping honors sustainability.

One of the reasons thrifting is a more sustainable option is because it extends a garment’s lifecycle. Fast fashion has kept up with the consumer’s demand for always wanting new things. However, it also fills up the landfills with old clothes because of the short life cycle. What’s more, it saves on the resources that make the products. Do you know that it takes 2,700 liters of water to make ONE cotton t-shirt? Of course, that is just in the making – you still have to wash it after wearing it a few times.

⎆ You will always look unique.

You almost never have to worry about someone having the same shirt or dress as you when you buy second-hand because all thrift stores are forever changing. The clothing comes from donations, therefore, they are never the same. So, you won’t be wearing the same item twice unless you want to. But what’s really nice is that your closet is completely unique and completely you.

One person’s trash is another person’s treasure! In fact, you can find all sorts of cool things in thrift stores. For example, I’ve found Levi jeans for $3 in perfect condition. Plus the thrift stores have anything from Forever 21 to Chanel. It is also a great way to get creative and crafty with DIY projects. So, what do you have to lose when you spend $5 or less on an item?

Doing your part for charity.

Another cool thing about thrift stores is that sometimes the proceeds go to a charity or another good cause.
