Pros & Cons for Which Flooring is Right for You & Your Family

Pros & Cons for Which Flooring is Right for You & Your Family

Carpets

Carpets are a popular flooring option. They are both aesthetically pleasing and practical for use. They’re available in a variety of styles, textures, and colors and can drastically change your room’s appearance. The cost to fit a carpet varies with the size of your house as well as what material you are choosing

⎆ Pros of Carpeting

Carpeting is a good idea if you live in a cold climate. Carpets retain heat and keep your floor a lot warmer than other types of flooring. So, you don’t have to worry about freezing toes in the winter.

Carpets are also the ultimate comfort flooring. They’re soft and cozy, and they make rooms feel cozier. But beware – with carpets, you might feel like sitting or lying on the floor more than your actual sofas!

Another advantage of carpets is that their soft textures make them the safest flooring option for households with hyperactive children or elderly people, cushioning them from falls.

Finally, carpets are also effective sound barriers. They will absorb some of the noise from the TV and speakers, and give you a peaceful living environment, free of noise pollution.

⎆ Cons of Carpeting

Although carpets are such a favorite among homeowners, they do have some disadvantages. First of all, they’re not as long-lasting as hardwood floors. They can wear down through use, so you’ll have to change it eventually.

But what’s concerning is that they collect dirt and stain very easily. This is bad news for people who are allergic because carpets are magnets for allergens like dust mites, mold, and pet hair.

So, if you’ve got respiratory issues or allergies, this may not be the ideal choice of flooring for you. With these problems, comes the issue of maintenance.

You’ll need to clean your carpet quite regularly if you care about cleanliness – and the process isn’t easy. Stains, in particular, can be quite persistent and you’ll have to steam clean often.

However, along with being careful, the occasional deep cleaning and regular vacuuming should be enough maintenance if you have a regular household.

Tiles

Tiles are the perfect flooring for people who live in hot climates. They keep the floors cool and provide your feet with relief in the sweltering heat of the summer months. They’re also good for moderate climates. Additionally, they come in a range of patterns and styles, catering to your specific needs.

⎆ Pros of Tiles

Tiles are the easiest flooring to install. They can be fitted within a short period of time. Additionally, there’s a lot less waste involved in the process, compared to other types of flooring

They’re also the dream flooring for people who hate intensive cleaning and are super busy. You won’t have issues of dust collection or stains that refuse to leave. Simply wiping them down with a cleaner will be enough to keep your floors shiny.

Even better is that tiles are the most affordable option. And they’re available in all sorts of styles. So, if you want the illusion of the marble or wooden flooring you’ve always wanted, but cannot afford – tiles have you covered.

Another cool feature is that they’re water-resistant. This means bacteria and fungi can’t grow on your floors, and you don’t have to worry about accidental water spills damaging your floors.

⎆ Cons of Tiles

As with all good things – tiles have their shortcomings. Although they’re really easy to clean, dirt is also a lot more visible on tiles. So, if you’re really particular about these things, even the tiniest speck of dust will catch your eye.

Tiles are also very fragile. If something heavy falls on the floor, they’re likely to break. And even worse if replacing one or two damaged tiles, this is not easy. It’s doubtful you’ll be able to find a single tile of the same design after a few years.

So ultimately, you might just have to change your entire flooring. Furthermore, the tiles are quite hard and can be slippery. In fact, they will cause accidents if you’re not careful while cleaning. Also, if you fall on a tiled floor, it’s definitely going to hurt for a long time!

Hardwood

Hardwood is a timeless trend for flooring that is considered a long time investment. You can mix different types of wood or go with the same color – either way – it always looks classy.

What’s more, wooden floors are organic, environmentally friendly, and free of toxins. Also, once you install hardwood floors, the value of your house goes up!

⎆ Pros of Hardwood

If maintained properly, hardwood floors are one of the most durable. Although they’re really expensive, you don’t have to replace them within the next 10 to 20 years. So, it’s definitely a  worthy deal. Hardwood flooring is also very likely to damage and looks even better with age. In fact, all you need to give it a brand new look is a bit of refinishing or resanding.

Simply vacuuming and mopping regularly will keep your floors looking clean. The fact that they attract very little dust, debris, spores, or fleas also helps. However, to maintain the shine, you do have to polish the floors, every 4 to 5 years.

And if you have pets, you won’t have to worry about any musty smells or pet dander lingering onto your floors. So it’s a pretty decent choice for keeping the indoor air quality in good condition.

⎆ Cons of Hardwood

The first downside is definitely the cost. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly flooring option- this is not it. The installation is also very complicated.

Hardwood floors are susceptible to termite infestations. But this can be avoided if you stay away from certain types of wood. They’re also prone to growing mold and fungus.

However, the most troublesome feature is that water can damage wooden flooring. Moisture can make your boards expand unevenly, making it look bad.

Additionally, staining is also an issue for wooden floors. So you’ll have to be really careful about spills. Therefore, they’re not a good option for bathrooms or kitchens.

Cleaning will require more effort, with the use of specific wooden cleaners and microfiber cloths. Also, wooden floors tend to become quite noisy after a few years of use. The constant creaking noises can be a nuisance for your family.

Final Thoughts

Hopefully, after reading this article, you have a good understanding of all three floorings available. They all have their advantages and disadvantages – so it really depends on your needs and priorities. So, continue to do your research and make a good decision about which flooring is right for you.
