There’s little wonder as to why so many of us spend the entire year looking forward to the Summer months. Clear skies, comfortable weather, and vacation time make summer the preferred season for people of all ages. However, summer can be a difficult time of year for your home’s appliances.

Luckily, keeping your appliances in prime condition throughout the summer months doesn’t have to wear on you. Rather, a little bit of safety know-how and TLC goes a long way to keep your appliances safe through the Summer months.

Your Appliances3 Tips for the Summer Months

The Summer Months & Your Appliances

➊ Purchase a Home Warranty

Anyone who wants to keep their appliances in top shape must purchase a comprehensive home warranty. The right warranty will cover a variety of big-ticket appliances and ensure that you don’t have to worry about repair bills. So, the next time your air conditioner, dishwasher, washing machine or oven have issues, with the right home warranty in place, you have no worries. Additionally, most home warranties are very affordable. So if you’re serious about maintaining your appliances, it’s time to start shopping for warranties.

Taking advantage of manufacturer warranties also helps lessen high repair costs. Conditions and coverage periods vary between manufacturers, but many appliances come with manufacturer warranties that last from six months to one year. Keep in mind, however, that the issues these warranties cover are fairly limited. Moreover, in many cases, a problem needs to be entirely the fault of the manufacturer for this type of warranty to take effect. As such, manufacturer warranties shouldn’t be viewed as viable alternatives to home warranties. Still, if a fairly new appliance goes on the fritz, a decent manufacturer warranty should provide some relief.

➋ Give Your Air Conditioner a Break

During the summer months, many households put their air conditioners through their paces. Whether you have central air or window units, overusing your AC stands to reduce its lifespan and increase your power bills. With this in mind, make a point of giving your air conditioning a break when you’re not at home. If no one is around to enjoy the cool temps the AC provides, there’s no sense in keeping it running. In addition to being bad for the environment, this approach to air conditioning can put a sizable dent in your budget.

If temperatures in your area take a noticeable dip during the night, consider turning off your AC once the sun sets, opening some windows and putting your ceiling fans to good use. Not only will this give your air conditioner a rest, but it will also provide you with a comfortable sleeping temperature.

➌ Be Mindful of Thunderstorms

Summertime is also synonymous with severe thunderstorms. In addition to being scary, these storms often cause considerable damage to every appliance in your home. In fact, if a power surge is serious enough, it can destroy multiple appliances in seconds. You can nip this problem in the bud by unplugging your appliances during thunderstorms. While this may prove mildly inconvenient, it will ultimately keep important devices safe from harm. This also saves you a small fortune in repair and replacement costs. Furthermore, this helps preserve the safety of your home, as severe power surges can also cause electrical fires.
