Decluttering your house after the holidays might not be your favorite topic, but I’ll bet you need some tips. What’s more, while it’s an unusual Christmas this year, the clutter afterwards remains the same.
Whether it’s the wrappings that didn’t quite get picked up or the extra furniture still sitting out for guests – clutter is here in abundance.
Bearing this in mind, today is all about showing how to reduce the clutter that accumulates during the holidays. In typical Marie Kondo style, here are some tips that you might find useful for decluttering your house after Christmas.
4 Tips for Decluttering Your House after the Holidays
① Removing the Christmas Tree
Granted, we can’t imagine many of you keeping an aging Christmas tree in your homes for months on end, but by the start of January most of us are still scratching our head on what to do with it.
Fortunately, there are now plenty of options. Various charities will collect the tree for a donation, while some local authorities offer a service as well (with several free of charge).
② Re-gifting is Perfectly OK
In today’s economic climate, if you don’t think you’ll use something you’ve received as a gift, it’s perfectly OK to re-gift it. In fact, there might a birthday or another gifting celebration coming up in which those gifts might find their forever home.
However, you might want to be careful about re-gifting back to the same family, so keep a tracking list. Also, coordinate a space in your home for these re-gifting possibilities. Then, they will be on hand when you need them.
③ Rearrange to Refreshen
Again, this is one period in which your home receives a barrage of new belongings. As such, feel free to experiment with new configurations for your home. You might even need to consider either a partial or a complete home remodel.
If that’s the situation you find yourself in, you’re most likely going to need a service such as Safestore Liverpool for temporarily storing your belongings while your home remodel is in process.
④ Bonus Point: This isn’t just about Christmas
While today’s post might be focused around the festive season, this is also the time to think about the bigger picture.
The reason that you have to consider decluttering isn’t completely due to the new gifts, but it’s also due to the number of existing items you already own.
This is a great time to take stock and assess what you really need. Have you used a particular item in the past 12 months? If not, why are you keeping it?
Decluttering is sometimes a painful process. However, you can take baby steps as well. This is where the interim storage option comes into play as a great solution. So, here’s to your post-holiday de-cluttering and re-arranging! We hope your year ahead is the most organized ever.
