The Meaning of Feng Shui

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese philosophy that dictates the organization of elements and Chi (energy flow) in your bedroom. Feng Shui is about being connected and flowing with the natural energy of nature. Feng Shui principles look at the organization of elements in the bedroom and the relationship they have with each other.

For example, you might be sleeping on the best memory foam mattress, but you have years worth of junk stored underneath your bed. This is considered bad Feng Shui as you are sleeping within the old energy of past relationships, remnants of bad habits, and or a bunch of stuff that you have no connection with.

When designing your bedroom with Feng Shui principles, there are a few key things to consider. Not only do you need to ensure you have the most comfortable mattress, but the positioning of your bed frame and mattress is also vital to the flow of Chi. Additionally, how and where you place other bedroom furniture is also important when trying to achieve a successful Feng Shui design for your bedroom.

The Positioning of Your Bed

The bed is the central element of Feng Shui design principles for bedrooms. The bed is said to represent you, as it is the piece of furniture that is most in use. Are you aware that we spend up to one-third of our life in bed? Therefore, the type of bed should be well thought out. The mattress should be high-quality, serving a purpose to help you sleep comfortably and deeply so you can wake up rejuvenated.

The best mattress if you are considering a Feng Shui makeover is a cooling mattress. A cool bedroom supports healthy sleep and helps to reduce moisture in the air.

Next, you need to ensure you position the bed correctly. According to Feng Shui principles, your bed must never be placed directly in front of the door. You must be able to see the door, but do not lay in front of it. Laying with your feet in front of the door is often referred to as the coffin position. This posture exposes you to energy, which is said to have potential harm, especially if you are sleeping.

The Positioning of Other Furniture

The next most important piece of furniture is nightstands, and there must be two according to Feng Shui practice. When it comes to your nightstands, think symmetry. Two nightstands will always be better than one. Symmetrical design also assists with energy flow within the bedroom space.

Keep all other furniture to a minimum unless it has a specific purpose. For example, if you have enough space in your wardrobe, you might not require an additional dressing table.

Select the Just the Right Bedding

Bedding should also be thoughtfully considered. Select bedding that is suitable for all seasons. Plus, it’s essential that your bedding supports restful sleep. Hypoallergenic materials are a great choice to reduce dust and allergen reactions.

If sleeping quickly is difficult for you, a weighted blanket is a useful piece of bedding. Not only does the gentle weight pressure of a weighted blanket help create deep and restful sleep, but it also serves multiple purposes. It can be used as a blanket or a throw-in every season of the year. This dual-purpose makes it a great addition to Feng Shui design.

Remove Stacks of Books

Only have the book you’re reading in your room. Piles of books carry energy that can disrupt the calm, especially if half the books on your shelf have never been finished. The book you are reading serves a specific purpose. Having stacks of books on a shelf are non-essentials that do not help with the flow of positive and peaceful energy in the bedroom. If you’re ready to start sleeping better, a Feng Shui bedroom makeover might do the trick. Start redesigning your bedroom with purpose today.
