Design inspiration is found in many forms and often carries over into fashion. Be on top of the 2012 fashion trends using the following tips from our expert contributor, Mary Alice Franklin.
This season, women’s clothing will see strong trends in color and style. Pairing bright, vibrant colors with soft, muted pastels will put you perfectly in line with the upcoming style trends of Spring 2012. In particular:
FOR COLORS: Sunset over the Sea
Colors reminiscent of a sunset over the ocean will appear in full force this coming season: Sunset-inspired bright yellows and tangerine oranges; Sea-inspired muted jades, seafoam greens and dusty blues and roses; all grounded by earthy colors like driftwood and clay. Tangerine Tango will be the big “in” color this season. Christian Siriano’s color palette is super on-point this season (see attached image where he pairs a vibrant yellow with a pale pink).
FOR PRINTS: Geometric, Color Blocking, Floral, African
Stick with geometric, art deco designs, chevron and zig-zagged patterns, and the occasional feminine floral. Black and white should be done in strong color blocking. Notes of African prints in neutral tones have been subtly paired with some of these other trends, but should remain understated when done in something like a zebra-print.
FOR STYLES: Menswear, Activewear, Sheath & Drop-Waist dresses, Lingerie-Inspired, Metallics
Menswear inspires the lightweight coat or suit (jacket with shorts) and elevated athleticism looks for Spring 2012. Rachel Roy has the summer suit perfected. In the attached image, she shows us short pants and a cropped jacket in a lightweight fabric and appropriately pairs bright orange with pastel rose (see attached image). Alexander Wang is always the prince of activewear, bringing in geometric shapes and accents of bright orange to many of his pieces (see attached image).
Sheath and drop-waist dresses exploded onto the runway for the Spring 2012 shows. Think: flapper girl, metallics and art nouveau for chic eveningwear. Notes of lingerie appear in cropped tops, lace and mesh. Gucci’s Spring 2012 collection showcases this 20’s-inspired flapper look with metallic, geometric patterns and drop waists.
