If you have elderly family members, you know how hard it sometimes is for them to move around. They might feel stuck, or incapable of doing the ordinary things they used to love.
The most important thing you can do for your elderly family members is let them know you are there for them. Beyond that, though, there are many tools and technology that can help improve their quality of life even when you are not around.
To find products that help with mobility, try researching through the one-stop medical sales shop Jameson Medical or those local to you. With a little help, your elderly or disabled family members can get around more easily and be safer in their homes.
Here are just a few suggestions to help older or disabled family members live a full life.
Help Your Elderly Family Members Get Better Mobility in the Home
⎆ Stair Lifts
If your loved ones are unable to come downstairs to join family visits, they might feel rejected. You can help them downstairs if it’s safe, but you could also consider getting a stairlift. It would give them independence and enable them to move around their entire home.
Many homes have steps leading to the front door, or areas within the home where there may be a step-up. In these spaces, a ramp is a great idea. If the person uses a wheelchair, they will be able to wheel up to their door or from room to room. Even if they don’t have a chair, taking away the abrupt steps will make it easier for them to navigate the house if they find walking challenging. Ramps are an easy DIY project, too.
⎆ Adjustable Beds
Honestly, adjustable beds are great at any age! They are set up like a normal bed in some ways, but the height and curves of the bed can be adjusted for a more comfortable sleep. It also makes getting in and out of bed safer. With aching joints, this could be the difference between a good night’s sleep and restless tossing and turning. The beds can adjust as necessary for maximum comfort, usually with remote control.
⎆ Physical Therapy
If your relative or friend wants to be more active and in shape, then you could consider hiring a physical therapist for them. Many will do home visits, and you can often buy the equipment to keep up a fitness routine at home. Even if the physical therapist is not available, you or someone else can help the person perform some easy exercises with the at-home set-up.
⎆ Home Nurse
It’s far more beneficial to visit your family than it is to have someone else do it. But if you are really worried about them and you work a lot, consider hiring a home nurse. Some nurses may live in the home with your loved one, but most stop by for daily visits. They’ll give them company, help them keep clean, and ensure take any medications. Home nurses are a good option for those who need daily care and want to remain living in their own homes.
Aging does not mean that a person can no longer enjoy life. Rather, help elderly family members by giving them the tools and encouragement to stay in good shape and live life to the fullest. Showing them that you care and making frequent visits are the most important thing you can do but helping them keep their independence is also important.
Give your elderly family members the gift of freedom with the tools and ideas listed above. A few DIY projects and some quality time is all it really takes to make elderly family members happy. Take some time to visit and talk to them about it and see what a difference it can make.
