Check out this age-appropriate, fun, and fascinating bedroom design for a 4-year old who went from up fighting-sleep to peaceful-slumber when his space become more his own. Learn how our expert contributor, Robyn Hawke, found her design inspiration when decorating this bedroom for her growing client’s needs.
A Boy’s Bedroom Problem
The bedroom was for a 4yr old bedroom. He did not want to play in his room and the client even had trouble getting him to go to bed. The final result is that he is keen to go to bed and play by himself in his room.
As usual I asked detailed questions re his likes and dislikes, what the parents needed the room to do and storage considerations. Although the room was reasonably generous in size it was difficult to deal with because of the built in wardrobe and adjoining ensuite, leaving very little wall space for placement of furniture. The quilt cover was custom made and the use of removable stickers enabled an easy way to achieve a simplistic wall mural. Very easy to change once the client grows out of it.
Fortunately, I have a great painter who is not fazed by any of my requests. I drew the shapes and he painted them for me, though he drew the line at the road markings, that was my task. The colours were selected from the quilt cover and furniture to ensure they all complemented each other.
A Great Space for a Boy
The final result speaks for itself. I have since had another client contact me to replicate this in their child’s room.
