Electrical troubleshooting is not for everyone, however, there are some easy fixes most people can make. But, electricity is dangerous so always put safety first. Moreover, if you follow the tips below and you still have issues, then, it’s probably time to call a level 2 electrician who has experience with wiring and the tools of the trade to repair them.
For your information and practical use, we’ve listed some smaller electrical troubleshooting issues every homeowner needs to know.
Easy Electrical Troubleshooting Tips
Flickering Lights
If you turn on the light switch and the bulbs keep flickering, you might have an issue that is more than just annoying. However, begin by turning off the circuit and tighten the bulb or bulbs in their sockets. Loose bulbs can create flickering lights.
If this isn’t the issue, look at the wattage of the bulb and the wattage of the fitting. If the bulb is higher than the fitting then you could experience overheating, which will result in flickering and potentially a fire. If replacing the bulb with the correct wattage one doesn’t fix the issue then it’s probably a wiring issue and a job for the professionals.
Damaged Cords
A damaged cord can cause a short circuit or give you a nasty electrical shock. Those shocks happen because cables are repeatedly twisted with regularly use and eventually they weaken and break.
Instead of waiting for a shocking surprise, inspect all power cords on a regular basis. If they show signs of damage, they need to be replaced. Additionally, simply taping the break is not an acceptable solution.
Sockets Not Working
If there is no power to a socket then you need to check the breaker to see if it has tripped. If it has you can turn it back on and carry on. But, if there is still power to the circuit you’ll need to check the sockets next to the one with no power.
Verify that these work, if they do, there is a wiring issue with the faulty socket. You’ll need to shut the power off to remove the socket cover and ensure the wires are properly attached. This may be a job for the professionals.
Circuit Breakers Tripping
Circuit breakers are great safety devices however if they keep tripping, they are trying to tell you there is an issue with your electrical system. A breaker can trip because a light bulb has blown and if you turn the breaker back on, it will solve your issue. However, it can also trip because of a faulty appliance or a faulty circuit.
If you had just plugged something in when it tripped then you need to turn the power back on and plug the item into a different socket. If the power trips again there is a problem with the appliance.
Alternatively, if this doesn’t make the power trip you may simply have an overloaded circuit. Try unplugging a few items. If that solves the issue you’ll need a professional to run in a new circuit for you.
