Humanely Dealing with Common Garden Pests

4 Tips for Humanely Dealing with Common Garden Pests

1 • Deer

Although deer are beautiful wild creatures and you might feel blessed to see them on your property they can be a menace to your home garden. They love to eat the delicate little sprouts that are just popping up and other delicious offerings in your garden.

They can be tricky to keep out of your garden since they are great jumpers if you don’t have a special garden deer fence to ward them off. You can also plant aromatics such as mint, garlic, or lavender, to mask the smell of the fruits and vegetables you are growing that the deer might enjoy. They also do not like passing through bushes that have prickly thorns, so this can be another great option for around the perimeter of your garden.

2 • Caterpillars

Caterpillars in your garden can quickly destroy any corn, cabbage, or lettuce crop you have growing. These pesky critters will someday become moths and butterflies so you don’t want to destroy them completely.

In order to deter them from getting to your plants, create a cardboard collar around the base of your plants. This is one of the most common and easiest ways to keep them from wanting to get to your vegetables. You can also sprinkle coffee grinds around the border since they won’t want to climb through the gritty material.

3 • Slugs

Slugs love cruciferous vegetables such as beans, strawberries, corn, and lettuce and can quickly destroy your plants. These pests are nighttime feeders so you might not even realize they are on your crop. You can identify them as causing the damage by the slime trail they leave behind.

Much like caterpillars, they don’t like passing over a gritty surface, so a barrier of coffee grinds around your plants will help keep them out. They also are deterred by garlic, mint, and chives, so a border of those should help as well.

4 • Aphids

Aphids are small little green bugs that are a very common garden pest. They like to gather on leaves and suck the sap out of them until there is nothing left. As they are feeding, they secrete a substance known as honeydew which will encourage mold to grow on the plant.

In order to get rid of aphids, you can introduce a predatory insect such as ladybugs or lacewings, which can eat them in large numbers. You can also install a sprinkler system that regularly emits a strong burst of water to knock them off the leaves. A garlic-chili spray is also a great option to make the leaves taste fowl to them.
