Glass is one of my favorite materials to use when designing interiors, residential or commercial. I love glass because it is versatile, eco-friendly, can be cost efficient, and best of all beautiful. There is a lot of flexibility for amazing focal points in the decorative use of glass but there are also plenty of ways glass can function to enhance our daily tasks. I am a fan of these three glass technologies, so I hope you consider this timeless and wonderful material when working on your next innovative glass technologies project.

Adjustable Privacy

Privacy is a common concern with clients, whether it be residential applications in baths or commercial applications such as dressing rooms and conference rooms. Elmont Glass offers a liquid crystal filled glass that is switchable between clear and opaque. This glass technology works by running a low electrical current through the glass which makes the liquid crystal  molecules arrange themselves in a way that allows for a clear view. Switch the glass off, and the molecules diffuse light for privacy whenever you want it. Check out this short interview where Glen, owner of Elmont Glass, shows us how effective his switchable glass technology is.

TV Display & Mirror in One

For those seeking the sleekest integrated look, now you can combine your television or computer monitor with your mirror. Ad Notam offers this multi function technology; while not in use as a monitor system, the glass appears as a mirror. Imagine watching the news in the bathroom as you get ready for your day without having to mount a television anywhere. I can think of many applications for this glass technology where clients don’t want the appearance of a TV monitor or where one simply does not fit in the space. This technology really comes into great use when designing a space for maximum flexibility in use.

Energy Efficiency

The technology available in self shading sunglasses is also available for your windows. Activated by the sun’s energy, the tinted glass begins to darken to provide shade relief and energy cost savings. Aside from the lowering your energy bills, this technology prevents uncomfortable glare from the sun and damage to your UV sensitive furniture and materials over time. Unlike the switchable glass, tinted sun control glass is passive and only darkens as needed when the sun is directed on it.
