Homes are something that we all need. We all need a roof over our heads, protective walls around us, and a safe space to live. Additionally, we want a space that is comfortable and enjoyable to be in. However, the types of homes that are available now are extremely diverse and unique. One reason is because many people are choosing to live in alternative housing options. One type of alternative housing is a storage container home. Old cargo containers can actually be turned into beautifully designed dwellings. In this post, I will show you four spectacular examples of shipping container homes.

Containers of Hope, by Benjamin Garcia Saxe
This shipping container home is located in San Jose, Costa Rica. It was created by architect Benjamin Garcia Saxe, and it only cost $40,000 to build! This is because the house is made out of two 40-foot shipping containers, which are very affordable. It was originally designed for a couple who wanted a rural home on a budget. It features a slanted roof that lets sunlight in but also lets any hot air escape. It’s full of natural light and you’d have no idea that this home is situated just minutes away from a city of two million people.
Savannah Shipping Container Home
This gorgeous contemporary home was created out of two 40-foot industrial storage containers. It is located in Savannah, Georgia. The design is by Julio Garcia, who has been designing shipping container homes for a decade. Therefore, he has lots of experience and this 970 square-foot building didn’t cost a fortune. As you can see, the exterior of the containers was left in its original state. This gives the overall structure an industrial finish with the stunning deep blue color. The outside looks rustic, but the interior is far from that. Even though the interior features look like they come from a high-end home design store, most of it is actually salvaged and reused materials.
Little Box on the Prairie
This incredible shipping container home can be rented on Airbnb. It was completed in September 2013 for the HGTV Architectural series called “Extreme Homes.” This beautifully designed modern house is made out of two recycled shipping containers. It is located on 10 acres of rolling prairie, hence the name “Little Box on the Prairie.” It is just North of Livingston, Montana. The size is 700 square feet. Many of the materials in this home such as the redwood flooring and plywood wall panels were salvaged off-site, so the house features many reused finishes. The Little Box on the Prairie has a peaceful outside deck, and the colors really suit the natural landscape. To conclude, this home is the perfect little weekend getaway.
